Museum educational workshop ”Birdies are getting married” held
Valentine's Day is approaching, the day when we celebrate love. Today, it is customary for lovers to give each other expensive gifts, but in the past it was celebrated in a different way. Children wew given gifts, and the little birds were present at the celebration.
The story goes like this: ftičice/birdies are preparing a wedding ceremony on Valentine's Day, for which they need a cake. In order to do this, the day before Valentine's Day, some ingredients for making a cake, such as flour and sugar, were left on the outside window sill. The next morning, the children searched the yard for sweet pastries or candies that the little birds had left for them as a thank you for their help. Children who ran around the yard barefoot received an additional gift, red boots. This custom is best known in Zagorje and Međimurje, but we also encounter similar celebrations in other parts of Croatia. Children who once participated in such a celebration of Valentine's Day are now adults who happily remember this tradition and continue to cherish it with their children and grandchildren.
At the workshop Birdies are getting married held on Saturday, February 8, at the "Old Village" Museum in Kumrovec, birds were made of wool, and hearts, symbols of love, were painted.
See how we did in the photo gallery, and don't forget to leave some flour and sugar for wedding birdies/Ftičeki the day before Valentine's Day!
