A photomonography on the wayside crosses and chapels of the parishes of Tuhelj, Zagorska Sela and Poljana Sutlanska presented in Kumrovec
The photomonography Wayside Crosses and Chapels of Devotees in the Parishes of Tuhelj, Zagorska Sela and Poljana Sutlanska by Tatjana Brlek, museum advisor, was presented to the public at the "Old Village" Museum in Kumrovec.
All those present were greeted by Ksenija Krivec Jurak, Mayor of the Municipality of Zagorska Sela, and Danijela Lončar, representative of the Municipality of Kumrovec. In addition to the author, the publication was spoken about by the director of the Museums of Hrvatsko Zagorje, Jurica Sabol, and associates Slavko Zamuda and Rev. Majk Rušec.
The publication was created as a result of several years of field research and documentation of folk sacral art in the open air: chapels and crucifixes located in the area of the parishes of Tuhelj, Zagorska Sela and Poljana Sutlanska. The aim of the research was to collect photo documentation that testifies to the places and visual identity of folk sacral architecture in the villages and hamlets belonging to the mentioned area, but also to record the oral tradition that has been preserved to this day, as a collective memory, regarding the reasons for the installation of crucifixes and chapels. The publication also mentions the craftsmen who are responsible for the construction or renovation of crucifixes and chapels. The builders were usually self-taught craftsmen from the parish or from the surrounding villages: masons, tinsmiths, woodcarvers, carpenters and painters, who mostly repeated their artistic expression from object to object with minor modifications or decorations, depending on the economic capabilities of the client. The restoration of numerous chapels and crucifixes is due to priests, individuals from some families or groups of locals. In the area of the parishes of Tuhelj, Zagorska Sela and Poljana Sutlanska, in 39 villages belonging to the parishes, 20 chapels and 58 crucifixes were found. All objects are shown in the catalog section of the photomonography.
The promotion was enhanced by the performance of the church choir of the parish of St. Catherine from Zagorska Sela and the musical artists Mia Franceković and Tena Svetec, who presented folk Lenten songs from Turopolje.
