1903 in Croatia
In the Museum of Peasant Revolts, an exhibition was opened in 1903 in Croatia. The exhibition was created on the initiative of Silvija Limani from the Brdovec Museum and brought together 13 museum institutions.
In addition to the Brdovec Museum and our museum, the Koprivnica City Museum, the Samobor Museum, the Ilok City Museum, the Karlovac City Museum, the Ivanić City Museum, the Varaždin City Museum, the Sisak City Museum, the Vinkovci City Museum, the Križevci City Museum, the Bjelovar City Museum and the Museum of the city of Crikvenica, each processing the events in their area.
In Hrvatska zagorje, a broad popular movement mobilized the population against Hungarianization in 1903 and 1904, but also incited a general rebellion of peasants and a new group - workers. The movement affected several places: for example, in Zlatar, the house where the royal district head and notary lived, and where the tax office, the district court and the district district were located, was devastated. The post office in Veliki Trgovište and the stations in Zabok and Zlatar – Bistrica were damaged. Unrest also affected Bedekovčina, Mače, Hrašćina, Trgovište and Tugonica. The railway near Poznanovac was damaged. One person was killed in Konjščina, and additional military reinforcements were requested due to unrest in the Lepoglav penitentiary. One of the biggest movements was in February 1904 in Začretje, where peasants gathered under the slogan: Overthrow all officials, clerks and councilors of the municipality. The miners from the Krapina coal mine also rebelled. It was considered that there was a danger of riots breaking out in the ceramics and brick factory in Bedekovčina and in the coal mine in Golubovac.
Along with posters that talk about events in a particular area, we also exhibited postcards from our collection that show Zagorje settlements at the beginning of the 20th century. The exhibition will be open until October 3.
