About museum

The museum was founded to mark the 400th anniversary of the great Peasant Revolt of 1573. It is located in the baroque castle of the Oršić family from the 18th century, built in 1756 on the site of a medieval fortress, the remains of which are still in the inner courtyard. The first exhibition was opened in 1973, when the Monument to Matija Gubec and the Peasant Revolt, the work of sculptor Antun Augustinčić, was unveiled. A baroque chapel with original illusionistic frescoes attributed to the famous master Anton Lerhinger has been preserved in the castle. The chapel has a permanent exhibition Sacred Art of Hrvatsko Zagorje.

The permanent exhibition of the Museum, opened in 2002, offers a complete overview of feudal Zagorje, as the history, culture and everyday life of that era are covered through several topics. The Peasant Revolt of 1573 is the central event, but the feudal society is not only depicted through the clash of classes, but also through the layered changes that this social arrangement in the area of Hrvatsko Zagorje undergoes from the late Middle Ages until its official abolition in 1848.

In the castle, there is also a wine cellar in which wine barrels from the period when the Peasants' Cooperative was active were placed there. There is a beautifully landscaped park in the vicinity of the Museum, and a kilometer-long promenade leads to Gupčeva lipa. The museum organizes occasional exhibitions, museum workshops and events, the most famous of which are the Knights' Tournament and the commemoration of the Peasants' Revolt.
