About museum

Veliki Tabor Castle is located not far from Desinić. Its name comes from the word tabor, which means a war camp, that is, fortifications that were built to defend against the Turks. Veliki Tabor is one of the best-preserved late medieval and Renaissance fortified towns in continental Croatia. It was built by the noble Rattkay family during the 16th century, and it remained in their possession until 1793. The oldest part of the complex is the central fort, which had a residential and defensive function. Later, in the 16th century, four semicircular towers were built, and in the 17th century, rooms were added next to the northern wall. Among the owners, the famous Croatian painter Oton Iveković stands out, who in numerous works painted the castle and the picturesque landscape of the surrounding area. At the beginning of the 90s of the 20th century, by decree of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, it was handed over to the Museums of Hrvatsko Zagorje for use.

The first mention of Veliki Tabor can be found in Ivaniš Korvin's donation from 1502, in which he presented "castellum nostrum Thabor" to Pavao Ratkaj for his merits in the battles against the Turks. The oldest parts of the castle date from the 15th century, which was confirmed by archaeological research. Extensive restoration-conservation and construction works have been taking place since 2004, and today Veliki Tabor is one of the best preserved and presented Croatian medieval towns.
