About the Gallery
The Gallery was founded in 1970, when Antun Augustinčić (1900–1979), who had studied in Zagreb and Paris and would become one of the most prominent Croatian sculptors and an important figure in modern Croatian art, donated his works to his native Klanjec. The donation comprised sculptures created throughout his 50-year career, from the 1920s to the 1970s, which had earned him recognition and acclaim both in Croatia and abroad.
The Gallery building was designed by architect Ante Lozica. It opened to the public in spring 1976 with an exhibition of representative works selected by Augustinčić himself. In autumn 1976, the Gallery fulfilled all the necessary requirements and was officially established as a museum. In summer 1992, it became part of the Museums of the Croatian Zagorje, a public museum institution comprising five museum units.
The current permanent exhibition is based on the permanent display established in 1990, which resulted from a two-stage development of Augustinčić's original exhibition concept. The display adopts a thematic and comparative approach to his work and comprises two complementary sections: an indoor display of intimate sculptures, portraits and public monuments, and an outdoor sculpture park surrounding the Gallery.
Antun Augustinčić, known to the general public for monumental public works such as the Peace monument beside the United Nations Headquarters in New York and the Monument to the Peasants' Revolt and Matija Gubec in Gornja Stubica, is presented here as an accomplished master of intimate sculpture, particularly female and child nudes and torsos, as well as portraits distinguished by their expressive power, psychological depth and sculptural articulation.
The permanent exhibition is accompanied by educational materials and guides for students and adults.
In addition to its museum activities, the Gallery is also engaged in publishing and exhibition programmes. The Annals of the Antun Augustinčić Gallery have been published since 1981, while the exhibition programme Salon was established in 1983. Works donated by participating artists have since formed the Salon Collection, which is permanently displayed in the Gallery Studio at 2 Ivan Broz Street.
