Peasants' Revolts Museum

About the Museum

The museum was founded to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the great Peasants' Revolt of 1573. It is housed in the Baroque castle of the Oršić family, built in 1756 on the site of a medieval fortress, the remains of which are still visible in the inner courtyard. The first exhibition opened in 1973, when the Monument to Matija Gubec and the Peasants' Revolt, created by sculptor Antun Augustinčić, was unveiled.

A Baroque chapel with original illusionistic frescoes attributed to the renowned master Anton Lerhinger has been preserved within the castle. The chapel houses the permanent exhibition Sacred Art of Croatian Zagorje.

The Museum's permanent exhibition, opened in 2002, provides a comprehensive overview of feudal life in Croatian Zagorje, exploring the history, culture and everyday life of the period through a number of thematic sections. The Peasants' Revolt of 1573 is the central theme, while feudal society is presented not only through the conflict between social classes, but also through the complex transformations that this social order underwent in the area of Croatian Zagorje from the late Middle Ages until the formal abolition of the feudal system in 1848.

The castle also houses a wine cellar containing wine barrels dating from the period when the Peasants' Cooperative was active. The Museum is surrounded by a landscaped park, while a one-kilometre-long promenade leads to Gupčeva Lipa, the famous linden tree associated with Matija Gubec.

The Museum organizes temporary exhibitions, educational workshops and various events, the best known of which are the Knights' Tournament and the annual commemoration of the Peasants' Revolt.
